Slip covering became common practice in
the early 1900’s. As families closed their
permanent residence and left for the
Seashore for the summer they would cover
over their upholstered furniture with sheeting.
It was discovered that during the warmer
months these lighter weight cotton fabrics
were much more comfortable to sit on than
heavier upholstery weight fabrics.
